From Vision to Reality: Construction Progress

The University of Virginia Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology continues to take shape at Fontaine Research Park.

The 350,000 square-foot state-of-the-art facility is designed to bring together researchers, clinicians, entrepreneurs, and industry partners focused on accelerating science into next-generation medicines and moving breakthrough discoveries from the laboratory to patients faster.

This year, construction has reached several important milestones. In October of 2025, the final steel beam was placed during the "topping off" ceremony (read about it here). As of the summer of 2026, the building is completely enclosed.

Building for Impact

The Manning Institute is being built to help transform how discoveries move from the lab to the patient.

When complete, the Institute will support:

  • Collaborative, innovative biotechnology research
  • Transformation of scientific discoveries into real-world medicines
  • Creation of biotech companies and high-quality jobs
  • Partnerships with industry and entrepreneurs
  • Training the next generation of biotechnology leaders
  • Growth of Virginia's biotechnology ecosystem
  • Improved health outcomes for patients and communities
